Feng Xiaogang
Producer and Movie Director
|
Feng XiaoGang was born in Beijing in 1958. At the age of 18, he joined the Cultural and Performance
Troupes for the Naval and Artillery troops. His interest in performance arts, as well as fine arts, drama, and
literature peaked during that time. His oil paintings and woodworks have garnered him a number of awards. In the mid
-80's he transferred to the Beijing Center of Television and Arts, from there his potential was recognized by the
Center's administrators, who promoted him from the art department to writing and directing. Within ten years, Feng
became one of the top-grossing and acclaimed filmmakers in China.
Feng's first claim to fame was his 25-part television series "Stories from the Editors", from there he
went on to direct a 10-part miniseries "Chicken Feathers All Over". The series was praised as a television classic
that profoundly echoed reality; it was also known for its cinematic sensibilities. From there he spring boarded to a
hugely successful career as a filmmaker. His first films were commercially successful and crowd-pleasing melodramas, but
it was not until 1997 when his three films, "The Dream Factory", "Be There or Be Square", and 1999's "Mei Wan Mei Liao"
(Literally: "No End in Sight"), that made him into a household name through a series of stylistic breakthroughs. Feng
became known for his unmistakable wit in his dialogue, his melancholy sense of humor, and the microcosms of humanity
and society reflected in his stories.
In 2001 Feng finally garnered some international recognition with his Columbia-financed "Big Shot's
Funeral" followed by "Cell Phone" in 2003. He then went on to make "A World Without Thieves" in 2004, an ambitious
film that deviated from his usual melancholy humor, combining bigger stars, stunts, and visual effects¡etc.; all the
while keeping his keen sociological and philosophical observations intact. The film did quite well at the box office,
and won numerous awards, including "best screenplay" for the Golden Horse.
Currently Feng XiaoGang is in the post-production phase of his next feature, his first period piece,
titled "The Night Banquet". The film stars Zhang Ziyi, Daniel Wu, Ge You, amongst others. It also features famed
fight choreographer Yuen Wo-Ping, Academy Awards-winning production designer Tim Yip and composer Tan Dun. The film is
slated for a September, 2006 release.

Michelle Addington
Professor, Harvard Graduate School of Design
(moderator) |
Michelle Addington is Associate Professor of Architecture. She teaches courses and seminars in energy/environmental systems and building technology, as well as in new materials.
Addington is both an architect and an engineer whose teaching and research explore the re-conceptualization of the human thermal environment. Originally educated as a nuclear and mechanical engineer, she began her career with NASA, where she was a structural analyst designing components for satellites and rockets, and she later worked in the chemical industry for many years as a thermal process designer, power plant engineer, and, eventually, a manufacturing manager.
In the late 1980s, she temporarily set aside her engineering career and began studying architecture. After earning a professional degree in architecture, she joined a small Philadelphia firm as a project architect. She also was an adjunct professor of architecture at two different schools in Philadelphia , initially teaching design courses, but later asked to teach courses in building technology and building mechanical systems. While teaching these courses in technology, she became increasingly concerned with not only the representation of the thermal environment in architecture, but with its fundamental conceptualization. In 1993, she resumed the role of student yet one more time to investigate the potential for architecture afforded by new scientific theories in heat transfer and fluid mechanics coupled with emerging technologies. Her resulting dissertation, “Boundary Layer Control of Heat Transfer in Buildings,” put forth the proposition that tiny and discrete thermal interruptions could significantly affect the resulting heat transfer from any entity, including the human body.
