Harvard China Review 9th Annual Conference

China is in the most dramatic trajectory of change. No longer content to be a mere global "workbench", China has significantly narrowed its gap with developed countries in many technological fronts. No longer content to be the recipient of foreign investments, Chinese companies have aggressively expanded overseas, including several high profile attempts to acquire Fortune 500 companies in the U.S. No long content to the blind pursuit of GDP growth, China has shifted the focus to tackle a series of issues stemming from economic and social imbalances and formulate long-term strategies for sustainable future growth

Internationally, China's ever growing appetite for energy, goods, and services presents the world with both an opportunity and a challenge. Competitive global companies are rushing to meet the demands for an increasingly mature Chinese market, yet at the same time, soaring prices and shortages in energy and other natural resources as a result of Chinaˇs growth are sending ripples through the world market.

In the domestic arena, China's fast growth is increasingly fueled by domestic consumption, the fastest growing sectors are durable consumer goods such as automobiles and real estate, suggesting that China is about to enter a new phase of steady industrialization and growth. Faced with an ever expanding range of choices for consumer goods, Chinese consumers are becoming increasingly savvy, forcing both domestic and international companies to provide global standard services and products. Meanwhile on the other end of social and economic spectrum, the country is threatened by worsening unbalanced development and deterioration of the ecosystem. The country has renewed its focus on rural and social development and environmental protection in a bid to correct the disparities.

This conference aims to explore the implications of these developments and identify industry trends and policy recommendations.
