Harvard China Review (HCR; www.harvardchina.org) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting academic, economic, and cultural exchange between China and the international community. HCR was founded in 1998 by a group of students and professionals in the greater Boston area who worked together to bring China to the forefront of the world. In the ten years since its inception, HCR has enjoyed spectacular success through a series of events and publications designed to promote understanding of China’s growth and its role in the global stage.

HCR operates through three distinct channels. The first channel is HCR’s namesake magazine, published semi-annually. The magazine covers issues pertinent to the historical transformations occurring in Greater China from an academic angle, examining the prospects and difficulties confronted by the region as China develops rapidly into an open market economy. It targets academics, policy makers, and business executives who are not only interested in Greater China, but whose careers and investments depend on insightful information about the region. It also speaks to students and general readers who feel the need for objective discussions on crucial issues in this area.

In addition to the magazine, HCR also addresses current trends and events in greater detail through an annual conference held on the Harvard campus in March of each year. Each full day event presents a series of carefully designed panels centering on a theme prominent in the news and people’s minds. The conference is distinguished by the stimulating discussions it organizes on pressing business and policy issues, attracting many influential business leaders, policy shapers, and leading scholars. In addition, HCR conferences have received comprehensive media coverage as well as generous corporate sponsorship.

Complementing the magazine and conference is a bi-weekly seminar series, which invites distinguished individuals to give lectures and address the audience directly on the Harvard campus. Most speakers have practical experiences running businesses in China, and they share their thoughts and opinions with members of the Greater Boston academic and professional community.

The magazine, conference, and seminar series together provide comprehensive and timely coverage of China and the major international events affecting China. More importantly, they present a forum for the exchange of ideas between prominent leaders and inquisitive students and professionals. Thanks to the dedication of its members, HCR has distinguished itself among members of the government, business, and academic communities. As China moves into a new chapter in its history, HCR hopes to build on its excellent tradition and work harder than ever towards its goal of bringing China to the center of the world stage.
