John Holden

John L. Holden is Associate Dean of the Yenching Academy, a graduate center for the interdisciplinary study of China at Peking University whose current cohort has 124 full fellowship students from 42 countries. He is also Professor of Management Practice at the Guanghua School of Management at Peking University, and is Nonresident Senior Associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Prior to joining Peking University in 2014, Holden was the Beijing-based Senior Counselor and Managing Director of Hill & Knowlton. Previously he was Chairman of Shaklee (China) Ltd., a wholly‐owned subsidiary of Shaklee Corporation that he established in Beijing in 2005. From 1998 to 2005 Holden was President of the National Committee on United States‐China Relations. Previously, Holden was Chairman and General Manager of the China holding company of Cargill, Inc., where he was employed from 1986 to 1998. In 1981 Holden served as interpreter for National Geographic teams researching stories on the Yellow River and Tibet for the bestselling book Journey Into China. Holden has been active in the American Chambers of Commerce in both Hong Kong and Beijing, and served as chairman of the board of governors of the latter organization in 1997. He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, and serves as advisor to a number of not-for-profit organizations. After completing a B.A. magna cum laude in Chinese Language and Literature at the University of Minnesota, Holden attended Stanford University, where he received an M.A. and completed all requirements, except the dissertation, for a Ph.D. focusing on classical Chinese literature. He first traveled to the People’s Republic of China in 1974 and has lived in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taipei for 27 years. He is married and has two adult daughters.

Holden (何立强)是北京大学燕京学堂(一所拥有来自42个国家及124名全额奖学金获得者,并主攻于跨学科学习的研究所)副院长,北京大学光华管理学院管理实践课程教授,及卡内基国际和平基金会资深访问协理。在2014年加入北京大学之前,Holden曾供职于伟达公共关系顾问公司,并担任北京区高级顾问与管理总监。在此之前,Holden曾任嘉康利中国公司(于2005年成立于北京的嘉康利集团全资子公司)主席。1998到2005年,他担任美中关系全国委员会主席。1986年到1998年,Holden曾供职于美国嘉吉公司,并担任董事长兼总经理。1981年,Holden曾在国家地理团队中进行有关于黄河及西藏故事的研究,并担任畅销书Journey Into China的解释翻译工作。Holden一直活跃于美国商会位于香港及北京的办事处,并且在1997年担任理事会主席。Holden是美国外交关系协会终身会员,供职于美中关系全国委员会,并为多个非营利性组织担任顾问。在获得明尼苏达大学中文语言与文学极优等学士学位之后,Holden在斯坦福大学取得硕士学位,并完成了除学术论文之外的所有中国古典文学博士学位要求。他1974年第一次到访中国,并在北京、香港以及台北生活了27年。Holden已结婚并有两个已成年的女儿。
